Hanoi exhibition features dragon-carved antiques

An exhibition featuring Vietnamese antiques from the last 20 centuries carved with the image of dragons is being held in Hanoi to welcome the coming lunar new year of the dragon.
Titled “Dragon on antiques,” the exhibition gathers around 60 exhibits dating back to Dong Son Culture, which flourished in northern Vietnam from 2,000 BC-200 AD, to the beginning of the 20th century.
The different images of dragons carved on the antiques - which are made of bronze, pearl, ceramic, enameled ceramic jade stone, terracotta, and wood - reflects the differences in the thinking of Vietnamese people in separate historical periods regarding the legendary creature.
According to an ancient myth, the Vietnamese people are descended from a dragon and a fairy. To them, the dragon brings rain, essential for agriculture; and it also represents the emperor, the prosperity, and power of the nation.
The exhibition, held by the National Museum of Vietnamese History, at 1 Pham Ngu Lao Street, will run until an undetermined date.
